Registration of a residence permit

Law firm Inlatplus provides the following legal services in the field of obtaining a residence permit in Latvia:

  • assistance in preparing all the necessary documents for requesting on all the grounds specified in the law, both a temporary residence permit (primary and repeated), and a permanent residence permit in Latvia, as well as passing the annual registration procedure (renewal) of a temporary residence permit;
  • review of the documents prepared by the client necessary for the annual registration (renewal) of a residence permit in Latvia, for their compliance with the requirements established by law;

  • receipt and analysis of the decision of the Office of Citizenship and Migration of Latvia on the granting, registration of a residence permit in Latvia, extending the time for consideration of documents and refusal to grant a residence permit in Latvia, and providing the client with relevant explanations about the consequences of such a decision, the client’s rights and obligations;
  • appeal against the above-mentioned decisions made by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs of Latvia with the Head of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs and at the court;
  • client support in the form of consultations.

Upon receipt of a foreigner a temporary residence permit, the foreigner’s family members (husband/wife and their minor children) will also be able to get a temporary residence permit.

After 5 years of residence in Latvia on a basis of temporary residence permit, the foreigner has the right to apply for a permanent residence permit under certain conditions – the acquiring of the state language and the absence in Latvia in less than a year over a five-year period.

After 10 years of residence in Latvia, a foreigner is entitled to apply for citizenship through naturalization process, which makes it possible to become a proper citizen of the European Union.

Temporary residence permit in Latvia is granted for a period of time between 6 months and 5 years, depending on the grounds to obtain a temporary residence permit. After the expiry of the temporary residence permit, the foreigner has the right to request a temporary residence permit for the same period and for the same reason or to apply for a temporary residence permit on different grounds.

Current normative enactments of Latvia state that foreigners must undergo annual registration of temporary residence permit. In most cases, the ID-card of temporary residence permit is issued for one year. Not later than 45 days before the expiry date of the ID-card, a foreigner must apply for the registration procedure.
